Have you ever thought about improving yourself ? reaching a better version of you ?
When i was a kid, i always hoped of having super powers a bit like Son goku in Dragon Ball Z or even like X-men . Once i grew up i understood that reaching such state is almost impossible, as there are moral limitations that push us in a certain direction. Moral limitations that restrict us maybe? or just control us of becoming huge psychopaths. But humanity has already forced the evolution of plants and animals through breeding and domestication. But where to stop ? What is the limits to our morality in the modification of our surroundings ?
Why not changing ourselves to reach a better version of us?
Here i want to share the ideas of Julian Savulescu who is is the Uehiro Professor of Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, the director of the Oxford Uehiro Center for Practical Ethics, and editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics.
First in this video, Prof. Savulescu discusses generally about how we, humans, already use multiple ways of enhancing our behavior and personality through pharmaceutical pills.
In his latest interview, he pushes the thinking a bit further away discussing about the possibility for parents to choose their kids characteristics in the future ? about liberal eugenics and about the importance to keep an open mind in thinking our moral limits for the future.
What about you , what do you think? Would you ever use biology, now or in the future, to make yourself or your kids better people ?
PS: The ideas present in the video and/or the article by Prof. Savulescu do not represent my personal opinion or the opinion of Karmagenes. We believe though that it is an interesting subject to think of and to consider for the future.
